This spring the photography industry spotlight will shine on the historically proud and culturally vibrant city of Leeds for the fifth edition of Photo North Festival where some incredible photography will be exhibited.

Exhibitions by legends of the profession will be on display alongside up and coming photographers when the Photo North Festival returns to Leeds in April.

Peter Mitchell

Set against a backdrop of talks, networking, screenings, food, drink and much more, the three-day festival will take place at The Carriageworks Theatre, Millennium Square and promises to be another hugely popular event.

Martin Parr

Some of the highlights this year include an exhibition by British documentary photographer Peter Mitchell who is well known for his pictures of Leeds and the surrounding area over the last 40 years.

Martin Parr will exhibit a selection of images from Chew Stoke, a Year in the Life of an English Village taken back in 1992. Parr shot hundreds of rolls of film to capture the everyday scenes that defined the community.

Peter Dench

Sun, Sea and Sandbags by Peter Dench meanwhile captures the scenes of resilience from Ukraine’s Black Sea city port of Odessa following the Russian invasion.

In partnership with The Royal Photographic Society, Photo North will also deliver The Fighting Spirit of South London by Aneesa Dawoojee to a northern audience. The Fighting Spirit of South London delves into the lives of martial artists and combat sports athletes and captures the indomitable human spirit as these individuals confront life’s challenges head-on.

Taking inspiration from the Brontës, Hardy and Free by Carolyn Mendelsohn is a celebration of women in the landscape that means the most to them, whether an open hillside, quiet expanse of water or an urban oasis while in sharp contrast John Bolloten’s gritty series Tbilisi Raw goes deep inside the Georgian underground with a rare and intimate insight into the secretive and closed world of the Elita football hooligans of FC Dinamo Tbilisi.

Once again, Photo North Festival promises to be an exciting, thought-provoking, lively and inclusive event and whether you’re a professional photographer, a photo-enthusiast, a keen amateur or somebody who appreciates great photography, it will be well worth a visit.

Photo North Festival runs from 12th-14th April at The Carriageworks Theatre, Millennium Square, Leeds UK.
