A JOY TO BEHOLD

Beyond reports on the rise of The Joyful Deli, a magical venture born in lockdown that has gone from strength to strength and grown into a thriving business thanks to the vision and determination of one woman.

As the world was plunged into lockdown in 2020, there was little joy to be found anywhere.

But for Jilly Pittendreigh, it was the catalyst to launch a business that has grown from a small roadside stall selling homemade bread, cakes and plants into a most enchanting restaurant, take-away and deli.

And it is only when you pull back the big sliding door and enter her old barn, that you fully appreciate how far she has come in such a short space of time.

For it is here where the magic unfolds and leaves you feeling like you’ve entered Narnia rather than an old stable on the edge of Addingham.

Greeted by cosy fur blankets, a roaring fire and thousands of fairy lights that fill the huge barn, this is a hidden gem that is guaranteed to take your breath away.

It’s testament to the determination, hard work and vision of Jilly, her family and her amazing team, who, in the space of just a few years, have turned their roadside stall into a venue bursting with incredible charm and home to some of the finest freshly home-made food you’ll ever taste.

Looking back on the amazing transformation, Jilly says she finds it hard to believe where four years have gone but puts their success down to a collective vision of bringing quality home-made food to the table, delicious local produce to their deli counter, supporting local suppliers and raising the spirits of all who visit.

She said: “I remember thinking when the world went into lockdown, what could I do to help people and so we started selling plants and home-made cakes and bread from the roadside which proved hugely popular.

“It became almost a community meeting point for those who were struggling mentally with the pandemic and after lockdown ended, we found people still wanted to come for a chat and enjoy a coffee, tea or cake with us and so we felt that moving into the barn was the natural progression.”

The transformation was amazing and having introduced a log burning stove and installed lighting, they were ready to pull back the barn door and let customers in late last year.

“It was a huge undertaking and one I couldn’t have achieved without my incredible staff and the feedback from everybody who comes in has been amazing.”

With a continental vibe, soft music and an onus on nutritious food, it’s a place that lifts the soul and brings a sense of joy the minute you walk in.

As well as a deli counter bursting with freshly made cakes, pastries, honey, olive oil, sandwiches, bread and fresh fruit and veg, Jilly has introduced hot meals including breakfasts, pizzas, soups and salads which can be either eaten in or taken out.

And having just got their alcohol licence, there’s plenty of wine and local beers to choose from plus the introduction of Victoria Malaga lager on tap at the cosy bar they have created.

In addition to their mouth-watering breakfasts, brunches and lunches, Jilly and the team will soon be launching an evening menu with the barn also available to hire for private functions, including weddings, parties and business meetings.

Jilly added: “It’s been an incredible journey so far and this year we’ll be looking to bring a real continental feel to the outside area where guests will be able to come and enjoy a beautiful alfresco dining experience.”
