Tailor Made
When it comes to getting the perfectly fitted suit, Norton & Townsend have spent decades making sure their clients are always a cut above the rest. Here Victoria Thompson talks through the process she and her team adopt to ensure they always deliver the perfect fit.
There are many reasons people want to commission clothes with a tailor. Sometimes it’s about recreating a style or colour that’s not available in a shop or other times it’s simply because ready-made suits just don’t fit.
Here at Norton & Townsend, our skilled tailors have spent years working closely with our customers to ensure every suit, shirt or outerwear is cut to perfection.
Let’s talk about the fit in a little more detail. The long, short, wide and wonky all benefit from the traditional cut of a tailor and when initially preparing a fit we always start simple and look at a person’s silhouette.
Our first task is to properly work out the natural waist point of a client, something you’ll never get when picking up a ready-made suit.
We’ll work it out properly and always aim to cut to flatter, so if you need more room on the front, that’s the only place we’ll add it.
Another key area we address is a person’s stance, which is something that can make a huge difference to the look and feel of a suit.
In the same way a chiropractor looks at a person’s posture to determine a problem, a tailor with a good eye, will adopt a similar process to ascertain what style and fit will work best.
We start at the shoulders and work our way down. Most of us have a drop shoulder which is easy to spot by looking at the level of your front jacket button and buttonhole. An unlevel alignment means you have a drop and this will give us a good indication of how best to cut the cloth to sit comfortably on you.
Following the line of your spine will help us work with your shape not against it and is one of the many checks we will make which will have a significant bearing on the finished garment.
In recent years, we’ve noticed a big increase in the number of slimmer, gym-fit men coming in to get measured as their body shape is often not suited to the ready-made.
That ‘V’ shape that comes with a big chest and small waist just leave too many compromises and we know where to add the size and where to remove it to create the most flattering look.
So, whether it’s a big chest, a wide back or a little too much around the waist, you can rest assured we’ll work closely with you to create a bespoke style just for you.
For when it comes to fashion, nobody is the same and not all the rules need to be followed. Here at Norton & Townsend we know which ones to bend and which ones to stick to in order to create a bespoke wardrobe that makes you feel a million dollars every time you step out.
