NOTHING LASTS FOREVER

To mark the release of his latest book Nothing Lasts Forever, an exhibition by the legendary lensman of Leeds, Peter Mitchell is now running at the city’s Art Gallery.

For over forty years, his pictures have captured the ever-changing face of Leeds and now a new book by Peter Mitchell featuring his incredible photographs has been released.

Best known for his chronicles of the city, Nothing Lasts Forever is the first retrospective monograph from Mitchell and charts his work and career dating back to the 1970s and 80s whilst working as a delivery truck driver.

Born in Manchester in1943, Mitchell studied at Hornsey College of Art in London before falling in love with Leeds whilst on a visit in the 70s.

He was so endeared by the city that he bought a house in Chapeltown and has lived there ever since.

For over 40 years, Peter’s life has been engrained in the city and his fascinating book takes readers on a nostalgic trip down memory lane.

The book acts a visual guide to navigate Mitchell’s long-rooted and poetic connection with Leeds and introduces his unique storytelling abilities, which include an alien explorer visiting Leeds for the first time and the re-telling of his autobiography through the eyes of various inanimate objects.

Regarded as one of the most important early colour photographers of the 20th century, the launch of the book coincides with the launch of his new exhibition at Leeds Art Gallery.

Jane Bhoyroo, Principal Keep at the gallery said: “This book and exhibition presents Peter’s photographs to a new generation and shares his unique and compelling vision which has the changing face of Leeds at its very heart.

“It captures its history as witnessed through the ruins of the buildings, the people who have lived there and remembers those who have stood proudly in their place of work.”

Described in the art world as ‘a narrator of how we were and a chaser of a disappearing world’ the exhibition will feature a series of talks and family-friendly events throughout its run.

Nothing Last Forever is published by RRB Photobooks and is priced £30. The exhibition is currently on display at  Leeds Art Gallery and will run through to 6th October.
