After a fresh makeover and menu re-vamp, we checked out the enticing new Garden Room restaurant at Devonshire Arms Hotel & Spa in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales.

There’s always been something special about pulling up at the Devonshire Arms Hotel in Bolton Abbey.

It’s long been one of our favourite haunts and for years The Burlington restaurant was the choice of those looking to enjoy fine dining in a sophisticated and elegant setting.

But this year, things changed with the arrival of
The Garden Room, a restaurant where diners can expect a less formal experience, yet still enjoy exceptional modern British food in this iconic setting.

Occupying the bright conservatory space overlooking the hotel’s Italian-style courtyard garden, it was a bold move by the Devonshire team and executive head chef Adam Harper, given the history of The Burlington.

But having sampled their mouth-watering Autumn Tasting Menu in such a relaxed ambience, its arrival could prove a masterstroke in attracting a younger audience to sample a menu that is brimming with seasonal, locally-sourced produce and beautifully presented.

Tasty à la carte starter options include duck liver parfait, Lindisfarne oysters, Exmoor caviar and char-grilled garden salad while mains offer the likes of Yorkshire venison loin, Yorkshire beef wellington, and roast cod loin.

But if you really want to push the boat out, the five course tasting menu at £75 pp (£130 with matching wines) comes highly recommended.

Harper serves up a menu that doesn’t try too hard but packs a mighty punch of interesting flavour combinations, tempting the palate and delivering a sensational result.

Stand out dishes were the salt baked garden celeriac, the tuna tartare and the estate apple crumble souffle which were all superbly paired with wines by the knowledgeable and attentive staff.

With a big reputation to uphold, The Garden Room, is growing into something of a revelation and one that serves up the quality you would expect from
The Devonshire but in a far more relaxed and laid-back setting that really does work.

The Garden Room is open Wednesday – Saturday evenings, 6pm – 8.30pm and for Afternoon Tea, daily between
1-3pm. Pre-booking is recommended.
