Yorkshire interior design practice Dean Heim & Co have come a long way in a short time thanks to their vision of seeing spaces differently and bringing a fresh and contemporary approach to all their projects.

What started out in a small garden studio with the dream of bringing a fresh approach to interior design has now grown into a fully integrated practice that is delivering high-end residential projects for private clients and developers.

And as these pictures, taken by interiors photographer Colin Gilbert show, their passion for perfection comes with every project.

Just two years after first launching the business, Managing Director Ben Holland has built up a team of five designers and craftsmen to help shape his vision of creating spaces that feel considered, functional and beautifully designed.

And having recently opened a new studio in Harrogate, he believes it is their multitude of skills that has helped them bring a fresh sense of clarity to residential interiors and how people see their space.

He said: “Our work is defined by a practical, design-led mindset, where each decision is carefully considered in terms of how a space will function, feel and stand the test of time.

“But above all, it is our fresh, down to earth approach to interior design that makes us stand out and has helped us grow so quickly in such a short space of time.”

At the centre of every project is a focus on bespoke, high-end cabinetry, designed and made in-house and their new studio has enabled them to showcase how they can transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.

Known for their use of clean, considered material palettes, the studio uses joinery as the architectural backbone of a space — creating interiors that feel calm, cohesive and quietly confident.

THE MAN BEHIND THE LENS

Colin Gilbert from Spaces by Colin reveals why great interiors need great photography to paint the full picture.

There’s a moment, just before the shutter clicks, when a space reveals itself.

My work at Spaces by Colin sits in that moment, translating interiors into images that carry atmosphere, intention and story.

Interior photography is often seen as documentation. A record of what’s been designed. But the reality is more nuanced. A well-designed space holds layers – light shifting across textures, materials interacting, small details that anchor the room.

My role is to interpret those layers, to shape them into a visual narrative that does justice to the designer’s vision.

That’s where collaboration becomes essential.

Working alongside Dean Heim, the process begins long before the camera comes out. It’s about understanding the intent behind the design – how the space will be used and the feelings it will evoke. From there, the photography becomes an extension of the design itself.

In a world where first impressions are increasingly digital, these images often become the first encounter someone has with a design. They need to do more than simply show the space – they need to connect.

For designers, strong imagery isn’t just a finishing touch. It’s a vital part of how their work is seen, shared, and understood. For me, that responsibility is what makes the work compelling.

Because at its best, interior photography doesn’t just capture a space. It tells its story.
