We report on how photographer Simon Robertson is looking to emulate the style and success of iconic cook book White Heat with a series of stunning photographs dedicated to Yorkshire’s top chefs.

In September 1990 a book was published that changed how chefs saw themselves. White Heat went on to become one of the most enduring classic cookbooks of the modern era.

With its unique blend of outspoken opinions and recipes, White Heat captured the magic and spirit of Marco Pierre White in the heat of his kitchen and those iconic black and white pictures taken by the late great Bob Carlos Clarke will forever live in the hearts of many.

Talking about his Shooting Chefs project, Simon said: “In 2022, inspired by the iconic imagery in White Heat, I set out to capture that same dramatic style created by the legendary photographer Bob Carlos Clarke.

“The Shooting Chefs project is a blend of culinary and visual arts, showcasing powerful photos that highlight the dedication and creativity of chefs. These images tell an emotional story, going beyond just food and art, inviting viewers to experience something truly sensory.”

Following a successful career in recruitment, Simon found his way back to his first passion, photography. Post-pandemic, he approached local chefs to give the industry some much-needed exposure after such a tough period.

Simon added: “I’ve always admired Bob Carlos Clarke—he’s a hero of mine. Combining that with my love for photographing food and chefs, I wanted to try and capture the magic he brought to his work.” 

With this series of striking photographs, Robertson hopes to honour the legacy of White Heat, channel the spirit of Bob Carlos Clarke, and tell the stories of dedication, innovation, and emotion that thrive in professional kitchens.

He added: “I’m not just aiming to take great photos of chefs—I want to deepen the understanding of how art and gastronomy are connected and my goal is to create an immersive visual journey that showcases the amazing talent of Yorkshire chefs.”

On top of his plans for a book, Simon has also launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the Shooting Chefs project. He hopes this will inspire up-and-coming chefs and help elevate the culinary world.

He continued: “This project goes beyond just the photographs. I see it as a platform where food lovers, artists, and the general public can come together to discuss creativity, innovation, and the artistic side of culinary craftsmanship.

“Through exhibitions, workshops, and virtual events, I want to bring the culinary and visual arts together, sparking inspiration and appreciation for both and my hope is to leave a lasting impact on the culinary and artistic landscapes.”
