THE ART OF THE MATTER

This year saw Palette launch their art gallery and concept with two events that showcased their incredible array of original work from some of the biggest names in the art world.

All Saints Church in Ilkley was the atmospheric setting for two art exhibitions from Palette where packed audiences enjoyed a journey through the history of art and sport and the art of pop.

The first event saw gallery owner Nick Hockney deliver an entertaining presentation that introduced the sell-out crowd to the genre with complementary music and video that stirred memories and emotions and with over 50 original artworks on display, it proved a hugely successful evening.

Alongside these varied pieces from artists such as David Hockney and Roy Lichtenstein was art made by Outside the Box, the charity in Ilkley which helps those with learning difficulties and autism as well as pieces from the New Muse group of young artists.

The second event Pop Art and the Art of Pop in May introduced the audience to the history of pop art, where the differences between British and American Pop Art and the influence of music on the art world was explored.

With major pieces by Peter Blake , Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, album covers, and live the event also saw music expert speaker Dr Natalie Rudd in conversation with local artist Helen Brayshaw.

The physical Palette Gallery will open at the Back of The Grove in early June where there will be an exclusive opening event entitled the Art of Tennis displayed to coincide with the Ilkley Open.

Talking about the events Nick Hockney said: “Both nights proved hugely successful and we hoped to help the audience understand the genre and the context of the art. It was really pleasing that many people bought artworks relating to events that were personal to them.

“The feedback was fantastic and we look forward to running new events every few months on a different theme and will look to extend events to outside Ilkley including some shorter ‘art and lunch’ events at key venues.

HOME CURATION

Alongside their gallery programme and curated events, Palette also offer a bespoke art curation service designed to help you build a collection that feels deeply personal and visually compelling. Whether the setting is a private home, a workspace, or a retail environment, the team at Palette work closely with clients to shape a space that reflects both identity and intention.

At the heart of the service is head curator,
Laura Mate, whose international experience brings a refined editorial eye to every project. Having spent years working with Elle Decoration across China and Paris, Laura collaborated with leading interior design teams to source and style artworks, objects and furniture for boutique hotels and private residences. She also produced interior photography for the magazine, giving her a unique sensitivity to how spaces are not only lived in, but seen and remembered.

Nick Hockney’s perspective is equally shaped by a lifelong immersion in the art world. Raised among galleries and creative circles, he has travelled extensively, witnessing first-hand how artworks can transform environments, understanding collectors, private clients and those who want to enhance their living space. This exposure informs a curatorial approach that is both intuitive and boundary-pushing.

Laura explained: “Our service goes beyond selection and we firstly explore your ideas and taste, then look at scale, light, spatial flow, and narrative—ensuring each piece sits in conversation with its surroundings.

“From initial concept through to final installation, we guide the entire process. This includes professional art handling and installation, with expert hangers ensuring each work is placed with precision and care. The result is more than decoration—it’s a cohesive, living collection that evolves with you.”
