Revered British designer Tom Dixon lit up the room when he recently entertained guests for an evening at Redbrick to share insights into his life, inspirations and most celebrated designs.
It’s 10 years since Tom Dixon, the creative genius behind so many innovative furniture, lighting and homeware designs, first launched his iconic Melt light – an object of sculptural beauty that put him firmly in the spotlight and established him as one of the leading figures in the design industry.
Groove Outdoor Collection: Heal’s at Redbrick
Now a decade on, Dixon is back with something truly special – his first-ever outdoor furniture collection, Groove, a design inspired by his parents’ old Citroën 2CV with its soft tubular curves.
And guests at Redbrick last month enjoyed an inspiring evening with the designer who discussed his exciting new concept which combines his signature aesthetics with outdoor functionality.
The collection represents the future of engineering and manufacturing, blending high-tech design with practical application and which is now available to explore and buy at the Heal’s store at Redbrick.

Talking about the new collection, Tom said: “If I had to post-rationalise my love of corrugations and decorative ridges, it would probably trace back to the 2CV. I grew up with that car and what was great about it was how it used corrugation as both a decorative feature and a structural reinforcement.
“These 2CVs were incredible – you could take out the seats and have a picnic and it’s probably why this chair feels so reminiscent of a 2CV.”
And the designer was also full of praise for Redbrick, the stunning four floor Victorian complex on the outskirts of Leeds, which is the perfect backdrop for his creations.
He added: “I take a lot of inspiration from the industrial heritage of this country. And here at Redbrick, it’s breathing new life into precisely that history. “What’s amazing here is how many sofas there are! Compared to London, you wouldn’t be able to find somewhere with so many different brands on such a huge surface area. So that’s the unique benefit of Redbrick.”
